ICWUC Local gets a $13,000.00 refund from the IRS

The Accounting Clerks at ICWUC Headquarters look at monthly reports as they come in for any irregularities or expenses or income of an unusual nature. Lois Bennett, one of those Accounting Clerks, noticed a large check a local union had written to the IRS. She immediately advised President Cyphers of the unusual check.

After President Cyphers and Secretary-Treasurer Villanova investigated the reason for the check, Secretary-Treasurer Villanova wrote to the IRS attempting to get relief for the local union. The matter was finally resolved with the local union receiving a little over $13,000.00 in a refund from the IRS.

This refund happened because Ms. Bennett was alert while checking the monthly report and Secretary-Treasurer Villanova was able to negotiate that amount in a refund from the IRS for the local union. This is just one of the many ways the ICWUC Headquarters’ staff works behind the scenes for our local unions. Great job for our members, Lois and Greg!

Congratulations!!!

Congratulations are in order to several ICWUC Headquarters employees. Dan Ardelian, Lois Bennett, Deonna Matthews and Linda Wattley all recently received promotions to new positions.

Dan Ardelian was promoted to Office Manager after the retirement of long-time ICWUC employee Charlotte Groggs. As Office Manager, Dan oversees the day-to-day activities of the clerical support staff at ICWUC Headquarters. In addition to his Accounting Department and grant-related duties, he is also responsible for coordinating many other activities, such as the mailing of local union election postcards and the ordering of watches, union apparel and other supplies.

Lois Bennett is usually the first voice you hear when you call the ICWUC Headquarters switchboard. Lois was promoted to the position of Accounting Clerk. In her new position she handles check writing for expenses and grant-related payments, as well as the data entry. She also performs routine secretarial functions and special accounting and bookkeeping projects.

Deonna Matthews was promoted to Special Assistant to the Council President. In addition to handling special assignments from the Council President, Deonna coordinates ICWUC’s involvement in various political activities at the Local, State and National levels. She is also ICWUC’s constituency group advocate and coordinates activities with labor and other community groups such as UFCW Women’s Network, UFCW United Latinos, UFCW Minority Coalition and United Way. Deonna is also the Council liaison for the new member benefits program being launched in January, 2010.

Linda Wattley also handles many of the telephone calls made through the ICWUC Headquarters switchboard. Linda was promoted to the position of Accounting Clerk and is responsible for, among other things, the processing of field staff expenses, the filling of supply orders and the processing of ICWUC Headquarters mail.

Please join with us in extending best wishes to these employees in their new positions.
