On October 18, 2007 the Convention elected Art as the Vice President and Director of ICWUC Region 6.
In September of 1968 at age 19, Art Stevens became a member of ICWU Local #16 in St. Louis, MO and served as Shop Steward from 1970 until 1974. He served on the Executive Board of Local 16 as Trustee from 1975 to 1978 and as Secretary Treasurer from 1978 to 1988. Art also served on the Monsanto Council, where he assisted the coordinated bargaining negotiations for the nationwide Pension, Insurance and Savings Plans for all of the organized Monsanto Plants. He also served as Recording Secretary for that group just prior to his appointment as International Representative.
In July of 1988 Art was selected as the International Unions’ next Representative and he has worked in that position since then. He has negotiated numerous Collective Bargaining Agreements for some 20 different locals in all areas of manufacturing. Salt Mining, Fertilizers, Soap production, Soy Bean Processing, Micro Chemicals, Bentonite Mining, Ammunitions facilities, Intermediate Petroleum Chemicals, Air Products, and Window and Door production to name a few. Arts’ other functions for these Locals are grievance handling from the 3rd step of the procedure through arbitration. In May of 2006, he became a Certified Professional Mediator by earning his Diploma from the American Institute for Conflict Resolution. Additionally, Art has served as the chief spokesman for the Omaha Metal Trades Council as well as the Lone Star Ammunitions Coordinated Bargaining Council, both involving over seven different International Unions.
Art’s home is in Topeka, Kansas with his wife Barbara and has three grown children, Lisa and Tina in Topeka, and Daniel in Houston, TX.
Art looks forward to using his organizing and servicing experience to assist all of the locals under his direction.
