Walter L. Mitchell Scholarship

Walter L. Mitchell served as President of the ICWUC from 1956 until his passing in 1968. A strong advocate for educational opportunity, Mitchell worked while attending law school at night to become an attorney. At the 1968 Constitutional Convention, delegates approved a resolution establishing a college award program for the children of members, a cause Mitchell had championed. The scholarship program serves as a lasting tribute to his commitment to education and working families.

Each year, one scholarship is awarded to the child of an eligible member in each region, along with seven at-large scholarships. Eligible students may also apply for scholarship opportunities offered through the UFCW.

The Walter L. Mitchell Scholarship selection committee consists of three professional educators from colleges in the Akron, Ohio, area, helping ensure a fair and independent evaluation process.

How to Apply

Applications for the Walter L. Mitchell Scholarship are generally made available each November. Eligible members and their families should check this page in November to access the current year’s application form, review eligibility requirements, and obtain deadline information.
