Organizer Lance Heasley filed a RC Petition with the NLRB on April 22, 2020 for workers at BASF in Muskegon, MI. BASF has taken advantage of the Covid-19 pandemic. Through many motions and appeals to the NLRB, they have managed to prevent the workers from having the opportunity to vote to have a UNION. (The normal time from petition to election is approximately 21 days.)
Due to the delays, and the continued pressure, by BASF on the workers to not support a union, Lance reached out to Lakeshore Community Labor Council President Ryan Bennett (above), to see if he could drum up some support from people in the community for a HONK & WAVE on May 20 & 21. Ryan went above and beyond! He was able to get members from UA #174, Utility Workers Union, United Auto Workers Union, a Muskegon County Commission Candidate, and State Representative Terry Sabo (below) to participate.
The purpose of the Honk & Wave was to let the workers at BASF know, that what they are doing is bigger than them and that they have support from others in the Labor Movement & their community! There is a video hearing set for June 3, 2020. This is the 3rd time the board has set a date for a Hearing, the first was May 1, 2020. The Chemical Workers would like to thank Ryan Bennett and all those that participated on May 20 & 21! #SOLIDARITY FOREVER!
